MEMBER OPPORTUNITY

Parents/Guardians and community members are invited to self-nominate for the community representative positions to the Special Education Advisory Committee.

To qualify as a representative, a person must:

  • be a Canadian citizen;
  • be the full age of eighteen years;
  • be a resident within the jurisdiction of the Board;
  • be a public school elector; and
  • not be employed by the èAV in any capacity

The term of office will coincide with the term of office (4 years) for Board Trustees with the current term ending November 30, 2022. Regular monthly meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month from September to June, and take place from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.

SEAC is an advisory committee that advocates to the Board for students with unique needs and abilities.
SEAC members value and promote:

  • Nurturing the individual child’s unique potential; and
  • Allowing full development of each child’s innate personal integrity, love of learning, and creativity.

Members of SEAC share a desire for special education and speak with a common voice for the good of all students at Lakehead Public Schools.

The èAV has recognized the importance of working with the Aboriginal community by establishing the Aboriginal Education Advisory Committee (AEAC) in November 2004. The Committee is comprised of six Aboriginal parents/guardians, an Aboriginal youth, Aboriginal agencies, a Trustee, an Elder and internal Lakehead Public Schools staff. It should be included that representation from both teacher’s unions are on the committee (LETO and OSSTF).

MISSION STATEMENT: “Connecting for Success”

The mandate of the Aboriginal Education Advisory Committee (AEAC) is to advise the Board on matters relating to the education of Aboriginal students.

The mandate also includes:

  • Increasing the cultural awareness of all Board Trustees and personnel through professional development and/or other related activities.
  • Expanding the awareness of effective programs for the educational needs of Aboriginal students.
  • Facilitating initiatives for all Aboriginal students.
  • Providing advice on initiatives including, but not limited to, student programs, Aboriginal studies, student retention and alternative education programs.
  • Developing and enhancing partnerships with community based agencies that support Aboriginal students and their families.
  • Responding to the Board on requests for advice and recommendations on matters that the Board may direct to the committee.
  • Advocating both provincially and locally for specific needs of Aboriginal students.
  • Identifying community issues that impact education.
  • Responding to other initiatives as they arise.

New Aboriginal education initiatives and projects are shared with this group for consultation and feedback. In addition, the group provides advice on the Board’s direction in terms of Aboriginal Education and provides input to the Board’s budget process.

The Aboriginal Education Advisory Committee (AEAC) meetings are held from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm on the following dates:

Preamble

“Greater Equity Means Greater Student Success”

Ontario’s diversity is one of its greatest assets. It is the Ministry of Education’s responsibility to respect and value the full range of differences we find in our students, staff, and the entire community. We know that to create safe, inclusive and engaging learning environments within our publicly funded education system, we must be committed to equity and inclusion for all students. At èAV (LDSB), we are committed to the success of every student. LDSB aims to foster caring, safe, inclusive and engaging learning environments that support the well-being and success of diverse students and staff.

Purpose

This Committee exists to provide advice and guidance to the Superintendent of Education on matters of Equity and Inclusive Education at Lakehead Public Schools (LPS).

Lakehead Public School District School Board is committed to advancing equitable and inclusive education by:

    • promoting learning and working environments where diverse students, staff, parents/guardians/community partners feel safe, welcome and respected; and
    • monitoring the success of diverse students and staff.

Scope

This Committee advises on equity and inclusive education in the areas of:

    • deepening awareness and understanding of equity and inclusion;
    • identifying current equity issues that adversely affect students, staff, parents/guardians/community partners; and
    • information sharing about equity and inclusive climate at schools and Board.

Authority

The authority of this committee comes from the Superintendent of Education or designate.

Available Positions

èAV continues to seek applications from interested public school supporters to serve in the following positions on its Parent Involvement Committee:

  • One Parent Member
  • Two Alternate Parent Members
  • Four School Council Representatives
  • Four Alternate School Council Representatives

The purpose of the Parent Involvement Committee is to support, encourage and enhance parent engagement at the Board level in order to improve student achievement and well being. Reg. 330/10 Sec. 27(1)

The Committee achieves this by:

  • providing information and advice on parent engagement to èAV;
  • communicating with and supporting èAV School Councils and associated network meetings;
  • undertaking activities to help parents support their children’s learning at home and at school through system level initiatives;
  • providing parent representation to other èAV committees; and
  • supporting positive relationships at school and Board level to enhance student success.

The positions are effective from November 15, 2021 to November 14, 2022. The Parent Involvement Committee meets a minimum of four times per year.

The Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) is composed of representatives from local associations/agencies, parents/guardians and community members dedicated to furthering the interests and well being of exceptional children and adults. In addition, èAV appoints Trustees to sit on the committee. SEAC is established under Regulation 464/97 s. 2(1).

Our Vision Statement

SEAC members value and promote:

Nurturing the individual child’s unique potential; and
Allowing full development of each child’s innate personal integrity, love of learning, and creativity.

The Committee meets monthly to discuss and make recommendations to the Board in respect of matters affecting the establishment, development and delivery of special education programs and services for exceptional pupils. In addition, the committee participates in the annual review of the special education plan, takes part in the annual budget process and reviews financial statements that relate to Special Education. SEAC also provides information and advocacy for parents as requested.
