Lakehead Public Schools has received notification from the Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) that an individual associated with Hammarskjold High School has tested positive for COVID-19. Lakehead Public Schools is working with the TBDHU to make sure that all potential risks are minimized and are providing all the information that is required for them to conduct their investigation.
 
Public health is identifying those who would be considered “close contacts” (high-risk contacts) of the individual with COVID-19. Public health nurses are following up with each and every individual or family identified as a close contact and these individuals and families are being provided specific instructions and guidance. All individuals identified as close contacts will be isolating at home and will not be returning to school until advised that they can do so by public health. The TBDHU will continue to follow up with those families to provide ongoing information and support.
 
At this time, everyone else in the school setting who is not specifically contacted by the TBDHU would be considered at low risk and does not require testing because of this situation. The school will remain open for in-class instruction as per regular practice. School families are encouraged to follow the Guidance for Parents and Caregivers provided on the TBDHU Website Safe Return to Child Care & School | Thunder Bay District Health Unit (tbdhu.com). All students and staff should use the Government of Ontario’s School Screening Tool daily before attending school Coronavirus (COVID-19) school screening (ontario.ca).
 
Hammarskjold High School, like other schools in Lakehead Public Schools, has implemented significant measures to reduce the risk of spread of the COVID-19 virus within the school setting. Further information will be provided to the school community if needed in the coming days. For reasons of privacy, we will minimize the sharing of personal information about any case and strongly encourage others to avoid identifying individuals. We have put into place strong infection prevention and control strategies and are confident that these measures have been effective.

]]> The Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) was notified that an individual associated with Whitefish Valley Public School has tested positive for COVID-19. The individual is currently at home and being followed by the TBDHU. The individual is not a student.

Working closely with the school and with Lakehead Public Schools, the TBDHU initiated a comprehensive Public Health investigation of this case to assess possible exposures. Although the individual with COVID-19 was at school during the time they were infectious, the Whitefish Valley Public School students, staff and community are not at an elevated risk at this time. All students and staff can continue to attend school in-person.  Students and staff should continue to use the provincial screening tool prior to attending school every day ().

The TBDHU, Whitefish Valley Public School and Lakehead Public Schools will continue to work together and monitor the situation for the next two weeks. Whitefish Valley Public School, like other schools in Lakehead Public Schools, has implemented significant measures to reduce the risk of spread of the COVID-19 virus within the school setting.
