At the November 9, 2021 Standing Committee meeting of the èAV, Grade 12 Hammarskjold High School student Jesslynn Friday was introduced as the newly appointed Indigenous student trustee for the 2021-2022 school year.

Jesslynn is pleased to fill the position and accept the important role of student voice to complement her active participation in the Hammarskjold High School community. Jesslynn has worked as a student mentor in the Reach Ahead Family Studies Program during a two-week summer program helping incoming Grade 9 students at Hammarskjold High School and has participated in the school’s Four Directions Program. Jesslynn was also a participant in the Indigenous Youth Art Residency Program from February to June of 2020. Additionally, Jesslynn brings knowledge and experience of committee work through her participation in Hammarskjold High School’s Student Indigenous Council (FIRE Council).

Jesslynn has acquired significant work experience by volunteering with several organizations including the Thunder Bay Public Library, Carpenter’s Union, Roseview Manor Long Term Care, Roots to Harvest, Thunder Bay Art Gallery, and Hammarskjold High School.

Following secondary school, Jesslynn would like to pursue an education in the fields of English Studies and Law.

Lakehead Public Schools is pleased to welcome Jesslynn into this meaningful role and looks forward to her perspectives, ideas, and input as the voice of the students. The Indigenous student trustee provides representation for all Lakehead Public Schools students in accordance with Ontario Legislation and is a non-voting member.

Stock up for academic success with Microsoft Office Lakehead students and parents get a free complete version of Microsoft Office. Word, Excel, OneNote, OneDrive, and Powerpoint included. To get Microsoft Office, login at www.office.com and click on the “install office” button.

One Hundred and Fifty Lakehead Public Schools Grade 7 to 8 students will have the unique opportunity to attend the third annual Student Technology Innovation Summit at Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute on the Friday, November 15 Professional Activity Day. The Student Technology Innovation Summit is an interactive and fun day that is focused on the technology that is being currently utilized in classrooms throughout the Lakehead Public Schools system. The Summit is provided through a partnership between Microsoft and Lakehead Public Schools.

“Through this partnership with Microsoft, participating students can experience a true conference like setting complete with keynote speakers and breakout sessions with hands-on activities to explore the exciting technology in our schools.” Says Gino Russo, Lakehead Public Schools Information Technology Resource Teacher.

During the Student Technology Summit, the participating students will explore, reflect, and create with exciting technology tools, including:

  • Scratch Game Design and Programming
  • Programming with Sphero robotics.
  • Robotics with the Superior Robotics Team
  • Programming with micro:bit
  • Makerspace with the Circuit Playground Express
  • Learn about block programming and create your own unique LED patterns.

Over 50 Grade 8 students have been attending summer learning programs at two locations – Sherbrooke School and Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute during the last two weeks of August. Students have been participating in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activities, cultural teachings, and community connected experiential learning while completing the expectations of the Grade 9 Learning Strategies credit.

“Through the summer program, the students have been building and strengthening academic skills as well as transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem solving,” says Jane Lower, Student Success Leader, Lakehead Public Schools. “It has been a wonderful opportunity to experience enriching activities and to build relationships with peers, graduation coaches and school staff prior to beginning secondary school.

During the program, the students learned about the many program choices available in secondary school. Additionally, the students were able to tour their future secondary school and visited Lakehead University to participate in activities led by the LU Aboriginal Mentorship Program students.

**Students will be participating in Geology Rocks and Toaster Mining On Friday, August 23rd. 9 am – 11:00 am at Sherbrooke School and 1-3:00 pm at Superior CVI

The Lakehead Public Schools the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme has continued its tradition of excellence at Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute following the move from the now closed Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate and Vocational Institute. The program has been offered to students for 18 years and continues to exceed the IB International Exam world average.

Students from the Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute International IB Programme undertook the International Exams in May 2019. The average grade obtained by this class was 5.96 out of a possible 7 points compared to the world average of 4.54 out of a possible 7 points.

“We are very proud of the incredible efforts and results of made by our IB students in their new school,” says Clarke Loney, IB Programme Coordinator. “This year’s candidates had a spectacular showing. Many of these students will now be rewarded with advanced standing credits in the Universities of their choosing in the fall.”

The top Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute International IB candidate scored 42 out of a possible 45 points.

“Scoring forty-two out of forty-five points is truly remarkable and clearly demonstrates that these students will be well prepared for University,” says Looney. “I am confident that the students will continue to strive to make the world a better place through advocacy and service.”

The IB Programme at Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute is free for students of all jurisdictions in Thunder Bay. Students must complete the Grade 9 and 10 IB courses and may continue on to the IB Programme with the recommendation of their intermediate teachers. Successful students in the IB Programme must also have the motivation and self-discipline required to succeed and complete this course of study.
